I tell family and friends that I do "internet radio" and they are ok with that. When I tell them I do a podcast they are "huh? what's that?" and then their eyes glaze over. I like the term internet-radio. I tell people to download it or click on it like a pdf or a program. Then they get it. I don't even bother with the RSS part. It's too complicated for them. But anyway they want to listen to podcasts, I encourage it.

I think us podcasters understand 'Internet radio' as traditional radio station streaming online whereas the non-podcasters see any online audio resembling a traditional radio station as Internet radio.

Good point Jim.
I would really like to see a survey made on the understanding of what podcasting and Internet radio is.

But as you said, the complexity of the subscribing process (and aggregator installation) may stop people to discover podcasts right at the beginning.

When I meet new people and talk about podcasts, they wonder what I'm talking about. When I say it's a form of internet radio that is pre-recorded, they want the URL to have a listen.

Do we have to make it clearer on our blogs that it's a form of Internet radio and use it in our keywords? I don't know. Due to the volume of searches, it's worth giving a try.

I don't think "podcast" and "internet radio" are the same thing, and it's unclear how the poll respondents might have understood the terms. Were they thinking of "internet radio" as "listening to my favorite radio station on my computer"?

It's true, podcasting is simply a delivery mechanism for a wide variety of content--but so is radio. And they're two different technologies. Cars and trains are both transportation mechanisms, but people are able to understand the difference.

I'm not sure the problem is with the word "podcast" so much as the still substantial technological hurdles to subscribing and listening to podcasts. Everyone knows how to turn a dial on a radio receiver; not that many people know what an RSS icon means, much less how to subscribe to an RSS feed.
